Antenatal Care - routine care for the healthy pregnant woman

Date published:  March 2008
State: Updated

Pregnancy is a normal physiological process and any interventions offered should have known benefits and be acceptable to pregnant women.

The guideline aims to:

  • Offer information on best practice for baseline clinical care of all pregnancies such as the number and timing of antenatal visits required.
  • Provide evidence-based information for clinicians and pregnant women to make decisions about appropriate treatment in specific circumstances.
  • Complement the Children's National Service Frameworks, emphasising care delivery and equity of access to care for disadvantaged women.
