Diagnosis and management of heavy menstrual bleeding

Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is a leading, health-related cause of lowered quality-of-life amongst women in the United Kingdom.  Management of HMB involves information and education, as well as a range of pharmaceutical and surgical treatments.  The aim of management is to improve the quality-of-life for women.

The aims of the guideline are:

  • To outline the clinical pathway followed by women with HMB in the National Health Service in England & Wales.
  • To identify and examine the key concerns of patients and health professionals relating to the treatment of HMB.
  • To provide guidance on the accuracy and cost-benefit of various diagnostic tools used in HMB.
  • To provide evidence-based guidance on the effectiveness and cost-effective of the various treatments used for HMB, in forms that is accessible to both clinicians and women being treated for HMB.
