Long acting reversible contraception – the effective and appropriate use of long acting reversible contraception

Date published:  October 2005
State: Published

Long-acting reversible contraceptives have high effectiveness and do not depend upon occasion or daily compliance, as with methods such as the pill or condoms.  Types of long-acting reversible contraception include the contraceptive injection, contraceptive implants and intrauterine method.

This guideline will offer best practice for all women of reproductive age who wish to regulate their fertility through the use of long-acting reversible contraceptive methods.

The guideline recommends that:

  • To improve services, women requiring contraception should be given information about and offered a choice of all methods, including long-acting reversible contraceptive methods.
  • Contraceptive service providers should be aware that increasing the uptake of long-acting contraceptive methods will reduce the numbers of unintended pregnancies.
  • Women should be given information about different types of contraception.
  • Healthcare professionals should ensure they undergo training to advise women on long-acting reversible contraception and administer the various mehods.
